Work in Progress Wednesday: Bits and bobs

carla Charity, Fabric, Quilting 4 Comments

I’ve been working on things here and there.

I went over to Amy’s for a belated birthday hangout and she generously offered 2.5″ strips of 125 green fabrics for my “green” quilt. I’ve decided to use Camille Roskelly’s pattern “Swell” from her new book Simply Retro. There are some really special pieces and I’m very excited about it.

After swearing off swaps for a while due to being disappointed by the results, I caved and joined the Text Me a Charm Swap Round 3. Here are my fabric choices. I got them all cut and collated but I haven’t sent them yet. Hopefully Friday or Saturday.

Collating charm squares

I finished my first Scrap Vomit top for 100 Quilts for Kids! I’ve decided to have these, along with the Super Swoon longarmed so I can finish more. I’m really motivated to work on them, even when I’m tired; at least in little bits.

Here’s the second layout.

Scrap Vomit for 100 Quilts for Kids #1

I got it pieced into rows on Monday before heading off to a BBQ for Labor Day and pressed the rows last night. (Like I said, little bits!) Hope to have this one at least half done tonight.

I still have a huge box of squares so I’m planning on at least a couple more square-based quilt tops before my drop dead mailing date to the longarmer. I also am planning to try to quilt and bind my Star Surround for the parade but I am thinking that is less likely  – I’d rather get more tops done for the longarmer and then while I have a week or so waiting for them to be quilted and mailed back, work on the Star Surround.

Here’s my list:

  1. Piece Flying Geese top and hand it off 8/31 (It is done; I posted photos last week; I just haven’t handed it off to my friend to figure out what she wants to do for the back / longarming)
  2. August Nurture Circle blocks for do. Good Stitches 8/31 (done, photos posted last week)
  3. Send Text Me a Charm Swap off to Swap Mama (cut and collated but haven’t sent it out yet)
  4. Work on 100 quilts for Kids! 9/30 (two tops done, another being worked)
  5. Quilt and bind Star Surround
  6. September Nurture Circle blocks for do. Good Stitches 9/30 (squares cut, need to cut strips and then put it all together.)
  7. Baby quilt for boss 10/31 (no progress)
  8. “Green quilt” for me  (collecting fabric, no other progress)

I love the look of scrap vomit quilts but I have not been brave enough to start one. I fear I would never finish it.

Thanks! I used 5″ squares instead of the “traditional” 2.5″ squares. That made it go together much quicker. Give it a shot!

Your scrap quilt for the 100 Quilts project is so fun and charming. Great stuff.

Thanks for the nice comments! I hope the kids will like them!
